The tube replaced the aftercooler in racing, starting in the early '80's.

High manifold pressure requires a substantial amount of ADI to prevent detonation. With these levels, the aftercooler was not very beneficial as the ADI was doing adequate charge cooling. Thus, racers removed the aftercooler and replaced it with a tube, reducing resistance in the manifold. An aftercooler will be used with the Bardahl.
