July 26-28, 2019: Tri-Cities Water Follies, Pasco WA
Miss Bardahl was joined by the Wahoo and Blue Chip for the round-nose vintage hydro exhibitions this year. The two Atlas Van Lines and Pay n Pak performed the pickle-fork exhibitions. This resulted in two vintage heats for each run window. One run was completed on Friday afternoon, and two each Sat & Sun, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
Following the first run on Friday, oil was found in the bilge and down the back right side of the engine. Upon further investigation it was determined the aft inboard hold down stud for the right bank had stretched and broke. This resulted in the sealing cap on the head nut to pop off and plug the aft oil return line. With the broken stud the sealing washer was no longer effective, allowing oil to vent through the non-sealed stud cavity. Fixing requires lifting the bank and changing out the stud – a time consuming process to be done in a shop (which we completed after returning to Seattle). In the mean time, the study nut was Yamabonded in place to help sealing and a towel was wrapped around the back of the bank as a diaper to minimize oil mess. Combined with running at lower manifold pressure, the engine worked fine for the balance of the exhibition runs.
Saturday & Sunday were standard runs. No other issues were encountered, the boat ran well, no one got hurt and we all got our annual team ice cream (twice!). Crew for this event was: Dixon Smith, Ryan Smith, Roger Kruse, Mike Pronovost, Steve Bergerson, Steve Compton & Jon Osterberg.
