December 27, 2002
The major continuing project was to finish laminating the battens. For details on the process, see the December 17, 2002 page.
The other project that was worked on was the stuffing box. It needed a shim to help set the depth and angle properly. A piece of spruce plywood was used. The oval shaped hole of the stuffing box was cut in the spruce. The aluminum was scuffed up, and the wood was glued onto the stuffing box using Hysol.
The stuffing box for this boat is unique in that it will have an aluminum insert that fits into the hole in the bottom of the boat. This is a slight change from the original design, but was partially necessary because of the size of the stuffing box, but will also help to seal the boat and protect the wood.
