December 22, 2003 - Battens, Stringers, & Transom
The full length battens had to be scarfed together to make a piece long enough. In one instance it was easier to glue the batten in place, and scarf in place rather then separately.
Around the engine compartment between the deck and engine stringers covering the frames will be aluminum flash-pans. These will protect the boat from the hot engine exhaust. To accommodate these, the engine stringers have been routed and angled inward. The inner aluminum skin on the stringer has been left at full height, and will align flush with the flash pans when in place. This is a minor detail, but will add to the overall quality and eye pleasing nature of the boat.
The rudder bracket is the original, has been cleaned up, and slightly modified (we're changing the type of bearings used). Currently the original transom is being used to confirm placement of the rudder bracket. There is substantial bracketry and structure inside the boat to support the loads that will be created by the rudder.
The struts are in place and have been aligned. Once the deck is in place we will check the alignment of the struts (to ensure the decking did not "tweak" the boat), and then glue them in place. Then the alignment bearings and shaft will be removed, and we will be ready to align the engine to the drive train.
