At the end of today's work session the majority of the battens were faired in. Further, Dixon and David mounted the front lifting eyes, as well as the bracket for the oil cooler and got placement for the rudder off the old transom.
The forward lifting eyes are on the outside of the stringers, set up for the nylon lifting straps that will be used instead of the original cable and spreader-bar arrangement.
The oil cooler is a brass industrial cooler that was originally used in the Circus-Circus. After extensive cleanup (to remove the pink paint among other things) the cooler was checked for leaks. None were found, so preparations for mounting were made. The cooler should be placed in the boat soon.
Much work has been done on the original rudder bracket to modify it to be usable with the rudder and associated hardware. Dixon broke several drills and end mills attempting to re-drill (straighten) and counter bore the bolt holes. Apparently there is a lot of sand in the casting! The bracket has been fixed, and the 1/8" aluminum shim (per original running condition) has been cut. The old transom was used to obtain horizontal placement of the bracket. Holes will be cut in the transom (and structure) in the next few weeks in preparation for mounting the rudder bracket.
Meanwhile, Ryan built a plug to fit in the turn-over hole in the transom, and discussion has begun on restoring the cowl and tail.
