With all the wood for the runners in place, it was time to start fitting aluminum. Over the past several days, the secondary and non-trips have been fitted. These pictures show the final fitting before gluing.
The secondary and non-trip aluminum will be glued directly to the wood, as on the original boat. However, the primary runners' aluminum will be glued to the set of battens seen in these pictures. These battens were laminated up while the fitting of the aluminum was taking place.
Placing the primary aluminum on the battens is a slight change from the original design, but provides much more flexibility and ease in changing the angle of attack. The original boat had thicker battens between the frames and the wood, and the aluminum glued directly to the wood, like on the secondary and non-trip.
The primary runners are made from 7075-T6 aluminum. The rest of the sponson is 2024-T4.
