November 28, 2003 - Right Sponson
This is the final update before the deck is placed on the boat. Hence, this section features a detailed look at the hull as of November 28, 2003. Because of the level of detail, this update has been organized by general categories, and sub-divided by specific categories.
As previously noted, the sponsons on the 1962-65 Miss Bardahl are very unique. Hence, much time and effort has been placed in recreating them exactly.
Unfortunately the sponson frames were beyond repair with rot and dry rot from years of harsh weather. However, this only added to the fact that these sponsons had been raced hard for four years and were "getting tired."
During the restoration the sponson were reinforced and strengthened (particularly with aluminum angle at the joints to the stringer) based on personal recollections of Dixon and David from sponson problems when the boat was racing. These improvements come at a slight weight increase but do not change the shape at all - only add strength for longer life.
